White Buffalo Laboratories was founded in 2017 by Dr. Tyler Smith. Prior to starting White Buffalo Labs, Tyler helped launch Rivertop Renewables, a renewable chemicals start-up company, founded on technology developed at the University of Montana. Tyler served as Rivertop’s Vice President of Research and Development for 9 years and played an integral part in bringing over $30 million of new venture capital into the state of Montana. While heading Rivertop’s chemical research, Tyler led process and product development and intellectual property strategy. Tyler holds 7 US patents with many more patent applications pending in the US and worldwide. He has co-authored 6 peer reviewed scientific publications and has given numerous technical presentations at conferences across the country. Originally from Mississippi, Tyler earned his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Montana’s Shafizadeh Rocky Mountain Center for Wood and Carbohydrate Chemistry where he studied the synthesis of chemicals derived from sugar and other renewable resources. Tyler’s graduate work helped lay the foundation for Rivertop’s core technology, a novel green chemical process for the production of bio-based chemicals as alternatives to toxic and polluting petroleum-based chemicals. Rivertop has been named among the Top 50 “Hottest Companies in Bio-based Chemicals” for the past two years. In addition to his work at White Buffalo, Tyler is an adjunct faculty member at the University of Montana where he teaches classes and serves as a co-advisor for a Ph.D. student in the Material Science program. Tyler also serves as the Chair Elect of the Montana chapter of the American Chemistry Society (ACS). As part of his involvement with ACS, Tyler organized a Chemical Business symposium at the Northwest Regional ACS meeting held in Missoula. This symposium showcased Start-up Chemical businesses from around the state and region and was awarded the 2015 ACS ChemLuminary Award for innovative programming in the Small Chemical Businesses division. Tyler also serves as a board member for the American Cleaning Institute (ACI) and is an active member of the American Oil Chemists’ Society (AOCS). Tyler divested his ownership in White Buffalo Labs in the spring of 2019.
